My areas of research thus far are mostly applied public finance and applied macroeconomics, especially pertaining to public-sector economics, fiscal policy, economic growth, risk management and Portugal. I have published peer-reviewed articles on efficient tax reform (oriented towards accelerating economic growth), optimal social insurance (from a risk-sharing perspective), carbon taxes (how to make the triple dividend a reality), fiscal competitiveness (and the role performance-informed budgeting and management can play), pension reform (the challenge of improving financial sustainability without compromising adequacy), long-term budgetary impact and social policy challenges related to an aging population, socioeconomic effects of COVID, effects of unconventional monetary policy, and on the impact in terms of macroeconomic performance of infrastructure investments. My tools of choice include dynamic general equilibrium models parameterized with microdata (preferably of an administrative nature) and macroeconometric techniques. Computational economics is thus a natural attractor for me.
