Joana Alfaiate (Research Analyst)

Joana Alfaiate is a Research Analyst in the Prosperity Index team. She contributes to the production of the Legatum Prosperity Index™ through providing analysis of data on countries as well as data analysis pieces, looking with special interest at Latin American countries. Prior to joining, Joana was a casework and research intern for two London legal NGOs, having researched EU law, international law, development and human rights. She has also worked as a freelance researcher on these subjects and contributed to The World Outline website, with articles focusing on Southern Europe and the financial crisis. Joana has an undergraduate degree in Law from the University of Lisbon (LLB) and a Masters in Law (LLM) in International Economic Law and Development from Birkbeck, University of London. In October 2013, Joana commenced as a PhD student also at Birkbeck, focusing on WTO’s decisions on trade-environment issues.

Nathan Gamester (Programme Director, Prosperity Index)

Nathan Gamester is the Programme Director for the Prosperity Index team. He leads the production of the Institute’s signature publication, the Legatum Prosperity Index™, managing all aspects of the publication from analysing data to authoring report content. Having previously worked in Parliament, Nathan also works on issues relating to policy and government as well as the economy, entrepreneurship, and wellbeing. He has authored many Legatum Institute reports and policy papers and his writing has been published in numerous outlets including the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Harvard Business Review, Foreign Policy, Jakarta Post, Journal of Palliative Medicine, Conservative Home, and The Diplomat. Nathan is the former Senior Parliamentary Researcher to Professor the Baroness Finlay of Llandaff, in the House of Lords. Before joining the Legatum Institute, he worked for several campaign organisations providing independent writing, research and consultancy services. Nathan holds a degree from the University of Brighton in Business Studies with Law.
